As a Rammstein fan many of us know the band did a videoshoot for Das Modell, but never released the video because of the tragic death of a famous fashion model and the tragic death of Lady Diana in the same year.
I already knew for some years that there was a short Making Of video somewhere online, but this video was very hard to find.
A couple of months ago I rediscovered this video and saved it on my computer. This video is only broadcasted once on German TV channel RTL2. It is mostly about two girls who were the price winners of a contest from this TV channel. And the price was playing a small part in the video.
That is a great, but it is getting a bit strange when the girls tell the audience the videoshoot is at the Western Crown Hotel in Berlin.
When you try to find some information online about the hotel you won’t find anything. But why?
I think the hotel changed names in the 20 years between now and the videoshoot.
Because of this it did not stop me from searching for more information.
I tried searching for hotels with “Crown” in their names. I only found 2 hotels in Berlin and both are Crown Plaza Hotels. One is near Potsdamer Platz, but this hotel is much to young, construction only started in 2002.
The other Crown Plaza Hotel is near Zoologischer Garten. But it’s main staircase is not near as grand as the staircase seen in the making of video.
So both hotels aren’t used in the video shoot.
Next I tried to search for hotels in Berlin with “West or Western” in their names. And the first result gave me the name of The Westin Grand at Friedrichstraße 158-164. The pics of this hotel showed me a grand staircase that could be the same as seen in the making of video.
I did a little bit of examination and I discoverd that the arches above the staircases looked very simular.
So I think The Westin Grand Hotel is the real hotel of the Das Modell videoshoot.
And when i found information at the hotels website about it being the location of at least 300 film and video shoots every year and this being the only grand staircase in a Berlin hotel this made everything clear.
