Coney Island, already known for its thrills and chills, is about to get a little more adventurous. A sprawling log flume ride, zip lines and a rope course will be constructed on vacant land between Surf Avenue and the boardwalk, between West 15th and West 16th streets, amNewYork has learned. Pedestrian plazas featuring food, arcade games and seating are set to rise on two other streets near the boardwalk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nCentral Amusement International, the operator of Luna Park, was picked to develop the property under a 10-year lease agreement with the city. The adventure park\n is expected to open next summer, with the water ride to follow in 2020.\n Alessandro Zamperla, president of Central Amusement International, said\n developing the city-owned sites will expand Luna Park\n by 50 percent from 300,000 square feet to 450,000 square feet. \u201cWe are \nadding new and more exciting attractions, but also enhancing the \natmosphere by adding more places where you can just sit and relax and \nenjoy some shade,\u201d Zamperla told amNewYork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city\u2019s Economic Development Corporation solicited proposals last year for the property between West 10th and West 16th streets, which totals 150,000 square feet. Three of the parcels were city-owned and two were purchased from private owners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nZamperla called the custom-made log flume a \u201cmagnificent attraction\u201d \nthat rises 40 feet high with spectacular ocean views and colorful \nlights. And then there\u2019s the 30 mph drop from the peak. \u201cBlow it up big \nlike the Jersey Shore, now you\u2019re in business,\u201d said Donnie Manetta, 35,\n of Staten Island, while visiting Coney Island on Wednesday. \u201cYou can\u2019t \nstop \u2014 keep growing!\u201d His eight-year-old daughter, Gianna, was excited \nby the rendering of the log flume. \u201cI want to go on that!\u201d she \nexclaimed. \u201cDefinitely a water ride I think is needed,\u201d said Long Island\n resident Cindy Marquez, 36, who said she brings out-of-town family \nmembers to Coney Island when they come to visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ropes course\n will be open to people with different skill levels, Zamperla said. The \nmost ambitious can scale 34 feet and then descend on a zip line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexandra Silversmith, executive director of the Alliance for Coney Island, which represents businesses including Luna Park,\n said the new rides could attract new visitors. \u201cThere are a lot of \npeople who are thrill seekers,\u201d said Silversmith. \u201cWe are missing some \nof the more adventurous rides and experiences here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silversmith \nalso said developing the parcels eliminates an eyesore and provides a \nmore seamless experience for visitors. \u201cWe\u2019re pleased they were chosen, \nbecause they were successful with Luna Park,\u201d\n said Eddie Mark, district manager of Community Board 13, which includes\n Coney Island. \u201cThe plans look very nice and should fit into the area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

City\n Councilman Mark Treyger said he was happy to see empty lots being used \nand that the renderings show CAI using historic Coney Island style in \nits designs. \u201cAs you walk through the amusement district, you see these \nareas of inconsistency,\u201d Treyger said. \u201cYou see areas that are lively \nand then these areas that are derelict and collecting dust.\u201d A \nself-described \u201cfoodie,\u201d Treyger said both local residents and visitors \nhave been looking for more food options in the area. \u201cI\u2019m a fan of \npedestrian plazas and where families can walk around and enjoy the \narea,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zamperla said the company is focused on honoring Coney Island\u2019s storied past. \u201cWe want to re-create the magic of Coney Island and bring it back to its heyday,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
