De basis van dit kasteel is ontstaan rond het jaar 1200, toen er een woontoren op de huidige locatie gebouwd werd. En rond 300 na christus, werd het een Romeinse vesting. Dit was voornamelijk om de toenmalige rijnbrug te beheren. De oudste nog bestaande oorkonde met de huidige naam Stein am Rhein, stamt uit 1267.<br>Het plaatsje heeft momenteel een compact historisch centrum, met diverse torens en poorten omringt.
