De stad is gelegen aan de westoever van de rivier de Suriname, op ongeveer 10 kilometer van de Atlantische Oceaan. De stad Paramaribo heeft samen met de directe omgeving de bestuurlijke status van een district. In 2012 woonden er ruim 240.000 mensen in de stad, dit loopt op tot circa 380.000 inwoners wanneer het verstedelijkte gebied om Paramaribo heen, het district Wanica en delen van Commewijne, worden meegenomen. Ruim de helft van de Surinaamse bevolking woont daardoor in of nabij de hoofdstad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ook in het verleden vormde Paramaribo het belangrijkste bevolkingscentrum van de toenmalige kolonie. Uit deze periode stammen nog veel monumentale houten gebouwen, die de binnenstad van Paramaribo sinds 2002 een vermelding op de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlijst oplevert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure
