Het concentratiekamp Mauthausen werd in augustus&nbsp;1938, vijf maanden na de annexatie van Oostenrijk door&nbsp;nazi-Duitsland, opgezet met als doel een mannenkamp in het Oostenrijkse gebied te realiseren, gevangeniscapaciteit te bezitten voor de geplande oorlog.
