Van 1934 tot 1963 was het in gebruik als zwaar beveiligde\u00a0gevangenis. 1576 gevangenen hebben het eiland als standplaats gehad. De bekendste gevangene was\u00a0Alphonse &#8220;Al&#8221; Capone. Voordien was op het eiland een militair fort (1850-1907) en daarna (vanaf 1907-1933) was er een militaire\u00a0gevangenis\u00a0gevestigd. Tegenwoordig (sinds 1972) is het eiland een beschermd gebied en een\u00a0National Historic Landmark, beheerd door de\u00a0National Park Service.
